What Is Hand Block Printing?

Hand block printing is a technique where a design is carved into a wooden block, the block is pressed into dye, and then stamped by hand onto fabric in a repeating pattern. Each impression is placed by eye not by machine which means no two metres of hand block printed fabric are identical.

Jaipur's three main hand block printing traditions are:

Bagru printing — done in the village of Bagru, about 30 km from Jaipur. Known for earthy, rust, black, and indigo tones using natural mud-resist and fermented iron dye. Patterns are bold and graphic.

Sanganeri printing — originating from Sanganer village. Known for delicate floral and fine Jaal (lattice) patterns on white or off-white cotton grounds. Colours are typically soft — pinks, yellows, and blues.

Dabu printing — a mud-resist technique where a paste of clay and gum arabic is applied before dyeing to create distinctive resist-print effects. Produces layered, textured patterns with a muted, earthy quality.

Jaal Print Fabric -
Jaal — meaning "net" or "lattice" is one of the most iconic hand block print patterns in Indian textiles. An all-over geometric repeat covers the fabric surface in a fine, interlocking grid, often with small floral or butti motifs inside each cell. Our Jaal print fabrics are available in White, Blue, Mustard/Yellow, Purple, Peach, and Brown on cotton base.

Butti Print Fabric -
Butti is a scattered small-motif print — tiny repeating shapes like flowers, dots, leaves, or geometric forms distributed evenly across the fabric surface. It is one of the most versatile print styles in Indian block printing, working equally well in fine and bold colourways. Our Butti fabrics are available in White, Blue, Purple, and Violet.

Floral Print Fabric -
Our floral block print fabrics feature larger, more expressive motif work — open blooms, leaf clusters, and botanical designs stamped in repeating arrangements. These include the White Floral and Peach Floral hand block printed cotton fabrics, both on natural cotton ground.

Paisley Print Fabric -
The paisley or "kairi" in Hindi is a curved, teardrop-shaped motif with origins in Persia that found its most expressive home in Indian block printing. Our Blue Paisley Hand Block Printed Cotton Fabric brings this classic motif in a rich blue on cotton.

Border Print Fabric -
Border fabrics feature decorative printed edges rather than all-over repeats — ideal for garments where the hem or edge is meant to do the visual work. Our Brown Jaal Hand Block Printed Cotton Fabric (Border) and White Hand Block Printed Cotton Fabric (Border) are both available per metre.

Chanderi Base Fabric -
Our White Hand Block Printed Chanderi Fabric brings block printing onto a Chanderi weave base — lighter and more lustrous than standard cotton, with a subtle sheen. Suited for festive and occasion garments where cotton alone would be too casual.

Hand block printing uses a carved wooden block stamped by hand, one impression at a time. Screen printing uses a mesh screen and squeegee to push dye through. Block printing produces softer, slightly irregular edges that are the hallmark of handcraft. Screen printing produces a cleaner, more uniform result.
